They were really an amazing performing band. Because they said we all sounded alike. And by the end of that tour, I was toast. And at that point were all thinking, Oh, wow. That's how I look at rock and roll drums, or drumming as a whole, actually. For a while, I was doing too many studio gigs, and I couldn't wait to get on the road. The manager, Herbie, fought for me to be in that band, when they werent sure. AD: I am. We were supposed to talk serious contract papers with him right after 4th of July weekend that year. Weve tried out a few singers. We toured probably nine, ten months a year, and the other two months that were left, we were in the studio making more new music, and then wed get right back out there. I thought it was silly to license songs for commercials and stuff. I remember that tour, the Raised on Radio tour. So you were always opposed to that stuff? Well, disagreements are part of life! RM: Ruth Underwood also played on 200 Motels. Aynsley was also a member of John Mayall's Bluesbreakers. I'm not that disciplined. And really did have a drinking problem, and didnt know it. Dont go out and play these songs with someone else and crack the stone. Neal and I wrote our first song that night in the hotel room, after the show. But at the same time, the difference between a voice and fingers, or hands, is neurotic at best. And sell some records. I met him when Journey was opening up for Jeff Beck, before Steve was in the band. It was crazy, but it was great. I did a one-off record with Sammy Hagar. That was in Dallas, Texas, because I got to a sound check and realized that people were lined up outside and I had half a voice. AD: The guys in the Starship know how to lock in and play as a band. The band is getting better and better, and with everyone writing, I have more opportunities to play different feelings on songs. And everybodys goin, Well, Neals not doin anything thats gonna conflict with Journey, yknow? But I recently heard another famous jazz drummer, and I got very bored.
